In an automotive market dominated by SUVs like Australia, you would think that the popularity of hatches will take a huge step back.
Well, not really. Among the 10 most popular cars in 2017, three of them were hatches namely; Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, and Hyundai i30.
Hatchback cars are still the best choice for convenience and handiness when moving around on four wheels. Aside from the three hatchback models mentioned above, there are more that have just been released or are poised to hit the market very soon.
Below are the seven best hot hatches due 2018 and 2019 in no particular order.
Honda Civic Type R
First on the list is a critically acclaimed hatch, which has been awarded as the 2018 MOTOR’s Performance Car of the Year last January and the new World Record holder for fastest front-wheel drive car. The current 2018 Honda Civic Type R, released in Australia last September 2017, is powered by a 2.0 VTEC Turbo engine that produces 228kW power and 400Nm torque. This hot hatch drives in front-wheels on a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Type R has three different drive modes: Sport, Comfort, and +R mode. When activated, each one retunes the throttle, suspension, steering settings automatically for maximum road performance. With its racing capabilities, Honda markets Civic Type R as the ultimate hot hatch.
Its outrageous performance is complemented by a bold look, 20-inch alloy wheels, and a dual-axis front suspension system. There’s no wonder why Civic Type R is also the 2017 Drive Car of the Year: Best Performance Car Under $60,000 by Drive.com.au. Although we have yet to hear an official announcement from Honda, it’s likely that we’ll see a 2020 version of Honda Civic Type R that will be released in 2019.
Hyundai i30 N
The 2018 Hyundai i30N has only been released in the country last April but it’s already been a massive hit. In fact, the demand for i30N has exceeded the initial 500 units allocated for this year. And though Hyundai will be adding 250 more units in an attempt to fill the demand, they remain on a 4-month backlog.
This hatchback by the South Korean brand is the first offering of its new N Range. Equipped with a 2.0 turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a power of 202kW and torque of 353Nm, it is Hyundai’s first high-performance vehicle that is ready to race with the likes of Subaru WRX and Ford Focus RD.
The i30N has five drive modes including the N-mode on the Sports and Sport+ trims. It’s interior features heavily bolstered sports front seats, 8” multimedia touchscreen, and the N-steering wheel. Although this hot hatch was born in Hyundai’s R&D Centre in South Korea, the i30 N is honed in the race track of Nürburgring to give you a high-quality performance for just a little over $40,000, a great value offering for the first hot hatch of Hyundai.
Holden Astra GSi
Expected to be available at Australian local dealerships by the end of 2018, the Holden Astra GSi is hot hatch worth waiting for.
Powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, it will have 187kW and 400 Nm output. We expect it stay with a front-wheel drive suspension system and available in either 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions, just like its predecessor 2017 Holden Astra.
Just last year, a prototype of Holden Astra GSi under development was seen while being tested. The prototype seemed to be wearing new front and rear bumpers, as well as a sportier but not too aggressive new look. It’s also wearing metal wheels with red brake callipers, which could just be for the testing stage.
In terms of performance, we can also expect the best racing capabilities, as the 2018 Holden Astra GSi was spotted in doing test drives in Nürburgring last year.
Volkswagen Polo GTI
Arriving the Australian market this month is the 2018 Volkswagen Polo GTI. It is bigger and better than ever in terms of size, specifications, and features.
This sixth-generation Polo is now more than 83 mm longer and 69 mm wider compared to the old model, which will leave a bigger footprint on the road.
It has new front suspension knuckles, thicker rear torsion beam, and optional Sport Select dampers that can switch to different rebound and compression settings.
The 2018 Volkswagen Polo GTI has upgraded to a 2.0 turbo petrol engine that is capable of max 147 kW and 320 nM output. The GTI engine has been known for quality high performance, that’s why we can expect the same capability with this hot hatch. It’s also available on a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. With fancy 18-inch rubbers, smooth handling, and advanced driver-assist technologies, Polo GTI is a must-have hot hatch.
2018 Ford Focus ST
For the fourth-generation Focus, Ford has decided to end (for now?) the RS trim. But don’t think the brand is giving up the hatchback segment, because the Focus ST is still here and it’s more than ready to pick up the slack.
2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine with 184kW power and 360 nM torque, six-speed manual gearbox, front-wheel drive, 62-litre fuel tank, Recaro® leather seats, and 18-inch alloy tyres.
The Ford hot hatch has that powerful sporty appearance and high fuel-economy that many car buyers will love on top of its affordable price. Aside from these, the 2018 ST boasts awesome steering that promotes fluidity even in tight corners. Toyota Corolla GR
It was September of last year when Toyota announced the “GR” range of sports cars. Since then the brand has released the Yaris GRMN (Gazoo Racing Masters of Nürburgring), as well as the Auris GR in Europe and its North America counterpart, the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback.
This new Toyota hot hatch is expected to hit the Australian market next year and we couldn’t be more thrilled to see another great addition to the hatchback segment.
There are no official details yet about the new Toyota Corolla GR but we can expect it to be at more powerful than Yaris GR, which produces 156 kW and 250nM output.
Mazda 3 SP25 SkyActiv X
Here’s another hot hatches due on 2019 that we can’t wait for. The upcoming Mazda 3 will be the first recipient of the SKYACTIV-X engine, which features a Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) technology and Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SCCI) technology. The SKYACTIV-X is a revolutionary engine that aims to produce up to 30% fuel efficiency.
The new Mazda 3 hot hatch is expected to have around 140 kW and 290 nM output. Early reviews of its prototype running around in Frankfurt, Germany are very positive. It’s said to have an improved ride and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) engineering. Looking at the popularity of Mazda 3’s appearance, we can also expect the 2019 version to be as slick and sporty, or maybe even better.
