Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Mitsubishi Triton; what do they have in common? They are three of the top 10 best-selling cars in Australia for 2017. They also happen to be some of the most popular off-road 4×4 vehicles you can buy on the market. There’s no denying that the country’s automotive demand has now shifted from performance road cars to huge and tough off-roaders. If you want to join the trend and need a list of the best off-road 4×4 vehicles arriving this year, then we’ve got you covered.
- Ford Ranger Raptor
First on our list is the 2018 Ford Ranger Raptor, a product of the trusted nameplate by many Aussies. Last year, the Ford Ranger model line sold 42,720 units and 36,932 of them were 4x4s. The new Ranger Raptor looks strong, massive, and has everything that you want in an off-road truck.
It’s equipped with a Twin turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder bi-turbo diesel engine, calibrated with a 10-speed automatic transmission system, producing a 157kW and 500nM output. The 2018 Ranger Raptor also sports 33” all-terrain tyres that provide 283 mm of ground clearance and 850 mm of water wading, the best you can find in its segment.
The 2018 Ford Ranger Raptor has six pre-set drive modes to complete its full off-road capabilities. Choose from Normal, Sport, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Sand, Rock Crawl, or Baja Mode with just a dial turn. Whichever off-road trail you want to conquer, the new Ranger Raptor has the right drive mode for you. The price for the new Ford Ranger Raptor is expected to be at $74,990.
- Toyota Hi-Lux Rugged X
The Toyota Hi-Lux is 2017’s best-selling vehicle in Australia and the Japanese brand is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, Toyota introduced three new vehicles to the model line last April; the Rogue, Rugged, and Rugged X.
The three new Hi-Lux models are based on SR5 and are strategically priced below their competitors, including the 2018 Ranger Raptor. These new vehicles are all developed and designed in Australia. The Rugged X, in particular, is built to overcome the toughest off-road conditions. It sports 17-inch alloy tyres enclosed by moulded wheel-arches, a heavy-duty steel side steps, and a tow bar that has 3500 kg braked towing capacity. It also has four-piece sports bar at the rear that can carry up to 75 kg of vertical mass or help tie down up to 200 kg load in the tray.
The 2018 Toyota Hi-Lux Rugged X is powered by a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine that is capable of 130kW/450nM output on a six-speed automatic transmission. It sells at $63,690 plus on-road costs.
- Jeep Wrangler
When it comes to off-road driving, there’s no other 4×4 vehicle more well-known all over the world than Jeep Wrangler. It’s also one of the best off-road 4×4 vehicles you can find. That’s why for its 2018 model line-up, we can expect more awesome off-road capabilities.
In December, the 2018 Jeep JL Wrangler vehicles will arrive in Australia including the Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon editions. All editions will be available in 2-door and 4-door variants, except for Wrangler Sahara (4-door only). All models will be equipped with either a 3.6 Pentastar V-6 Engine or a 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine, combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission system.
The new Jeep JL Wrangler models will also be offered with two types of four-wheel drive systems which are Command-Trac and Selec-Trac. A third system called Rock-Trac is only available for Wrangler Rubicon. Jeep hasn’t disclosed much information yet, but we can expect Sahara to top specs and Rubicon to be the most capable model, just like with the Wrangler JK series.
- Mercedes-Benz X-Class
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class series has already hit the showrooms last April and it’s based on the Nissan Navara. It included 13 variations of the X 220d 120kW/403nM and X 250d 140kW/450nM 4MATIC 4-cylinder 2.3-litre twin turbo diesel engines.
However, what’s actually making people excited about the X-Class series is yet to arrive this December and it will be named X 350d 4MATIC. It will be equipped with a 3.0-litre V-6 turbo-diesel engine with a 190kw/550Nm output capability, which is more powerful than the new Ford Ranger Raptor and most off-roaders on the market. The V-6 engine will be paired with Benz 7G-Tronic automatic transmission.
According to Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia, the X 350d will have 600mm water wading capability and 222mm ground clearance. It can climb grades of 45° max and can deal with 50° slopes safely. It will also be available in two trims; the X 350d Progressive and the X 350d Power. The pricing is expected to be at the $75,000 – $80,000 range.
- Holden Colorado SportsCat by HSV
Last, but definitely not the least is Australia’s very own Holden Colorado SportsCat dual-cab ute that has been released earlier this year. Produced by Holden Special Vehicles (HSV), the SportsCat’s design looks strong and bold. It has wider road presence and taller ride height compared to old Colorado vehicles, which is perfect for off-road adventures.
Consumers can choose between Colorado SportCat and SportCat+ trims, which are both powered by a 2.8-litre 4-cylinder Duramax Turbo Diesel engine with 147kW and 500nM output capability. The two trims are fitted with a standard 6-speed manual transmission, with an optional 6-speed automatic transmission. SportCat is the entry-level trim priced at $60,790, while the better-spec’d SportCat+ has a $66,790 price tag.
The Holden Colorado SportsCat+ has a rear de-coupling anti-roll bar and AP Racing Brakes. You also have an option to include the SupaShock suspension system for $3,600, and a stylish Sail Plane instead of the standard sportsbar for $1,300.
