Most of us are always on the lookout for a great deal or a way to save money. Clipping coupons, saving promotional emails, bookmarking DIY blog posts and happy hour specials are among some of our favourite things—not because they’re fun necessarily (with the exception of happy hour) but because our wallets need a break.

Life is expensive! We know better than anyone, so we’re always appreciative of great ways to save money. With Earth Hour having just passed this month, the environment is also at the forefront of our minds so we thought; what if we could find a way to save money AND save water?  Well we did.

Check out below for some of our favourite tips that will save you money and water;

  1. Start with your laundry: converting to a front loader washing machine is incredibly more efficient than using top loaders. So do yourself a favour and make the immediate expense for a long-term save.
  2. Try grey water pipes: These will help you direct waste water outside so you can use it in the backyard, without letting it go to waste! That’s a win-win for you and your garden.
  3. Stop washing small loads: This probably comes as no surprise, but you should only be washing if you have a full load! It will maximise efficiency, minimise waste AND minimise your bills.
  4. Use a bucket when washing your car: This little trick saves a ton of water because it allows you to see exactly how much water you’re using every time you have to refill the bucket.
  5. Watering the lawn: Shut off the sprinklers for the day and wash your car on the lawn instead of the driveway. This ensures no water is wasted and helps you make the most of your Sunday afternoon activity.
  6. Learn how much hot water you’re actually using: Time how long it takes your entire family to take their showers, then challenge yourselves. For one week each of you commits to taking a shower in under five minutes. Your hot water bill will be surprisingly lower.
  7. Turn off the tap: Put a sign up in the bathroom reminding your family to shut off the water while they’re brushing their teeth. You won’t actually notice any difference in your routine, but every ounce of water adds up on your water bill.
  8. Fix all leaks in the house: We know we’ve said this before, but it’s such a minor change that makes a huge difference to the amount of water you use and the money you lose paying for it.
  9. Minimise your dishwasher use: Make sure you’ve used all available space, every time, before you run the dishwasher. If you’re used to running the dishwasher three times a week challenge yourself and only use it two times. P.S. if you’re hand washing, NEVER wash with the tap running.
  10. Don’t waste the wait: When you’re waiting for water to heat up, whether it’s in the shower or kitchen sink, grab a jug and catch all that water. Use it to water your plants instead of losing it all!
